Description
A place I'd always wanted to visit, the beautiful city of Salem, Massachusetts....I finally got there on what was, unexpectedly for autumn, a very hot day and wasn't disappointed with what I found. A part of New England steeped in history, I wanted to make sure I didn't miss a thing, so despite the sweltering heat and limited time there, I covered as much ground as I possibly could. Making sure I took in the historic Old Burying Point Cemetery and the famous 'House of The Seven Gables'. One of my favourite buildings was the imposing Custom House, built in 1819 to hold the offices of the US Customs Service and workplace of well known author Nathaniel Hawthorne for 3 years, it was easy to see why it was, apparently, the inspiration for his classic novel, 'The Scarlet Letter'. The building is now part of the Salem Maritime National Historic Site. My feet hurt a little at the end of the day but it was well worth it to see and photograph Salem. I only hope I get to return again one day and spend a bit more time there.
